Mahjong rules: which variation do you want to play?
Tile counts, winning shapes and scoring change between mahjong traditions. Compare the seven families available in World Odyssey, including the Hong Kong preset, then choose a matching tutorial or AI game.
What to know about this ruleset
Tiles and hand structureKorean uses 104 tiles, Riichi 136 and Sichuan 108. Taiwanese starts with a 16-tile hand rather than the usual 13.
Winning requirementsRiichi yaku, MCR’s eight-point minimum, Hong Kong’s faan threshold and American card patterns are different requirements.
Check the exact presetA regional name alone may not identify your group’s house rules. Hong Kong, for example, is a preset within Guangdong here.
American mahjong: a card, jokers and the Charleston
American mode uses 152 tiles including eight jokers and a Charleston tile exchange. Winning hands must match the original Odyssey Card 2026. It does not include the NMJL annual card, so confirm which card your group uses before treating practice as preparation for that table.
Japanese Riichi and Korean mahjong
Riichi uses 136 tiles, yaku, a riichi declaration, dora and furiten, with details set by the chosen rulebook. Korean uses 104 tiles without the bamboo suit, includes flowers and sparkling fives, and has no chow claims. Its declarations and scoring are distinct from Riichi.
Chinese Official (MCR) and Sichuan
MCR uses 144 tiles including eight flowers, 81 scoring patterns and an eight-point minimum that excludes flower points. Sichuan uses 108 suited tiles without honors or flowers and requires a missing-suit choice. Its competition, blood-battle and blood-river presets differ in exchange phases and play after a win.
Guangdong and the Hong Kong preset
Guangdong offers Jipinghu, Tuidaohu and Hong Kong presets. Hong Kong Old Style is a preset within this family, not an eighth family: it uses 144 tiles with eight flowers, a three-faan minimum and a default 10-faan cap. Do not assume the same tile set or scoring for every Guangdong preset.
Taiwanese mahjong: 16 tiles
Taiwanese starts with a 16-tile hand and completes five groups plus a pair. Flowers, tai scoring and dealer continuation bonuses are part of its rules. This differs from the four-groups-and-pair shape common to 13-tile games and from American card patterns.
